Human Rights Defenders

CONTEXT IN LATIN AMERICA

In Latin America, human rights defenders operate in conditions that are often precarious, marked by structural inequalities, poverty and persistent forms of violence. Despite a lack of institutional support and resources, they play a key role in defending fundamental rights.

RIDHE provides them with support by strengthening their capacities, facilitating networking and accompanying their advocacy actions at the international level.

In 2023, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) learned about 123 murders of defenders in Latin America. Violence was particularly aimed at those who defended the environment and their territories, especially Indigenous and Afro-descendantleaders.

Internal Human Mobility in Latin America

Human mobility is a multi-causal phenomenon, the expulsion in the countries of origin and attraction in the countries of destination can be caused by several reasons. These movements take place in contexts marked by economic, political, and social instability, along with climate change and natural disasters, which increase displacement and vulnerability during migration.

The political crisis in Venezuela has caused the displacement of some 5.6 million emigrants to Colombia, which has put the country's resources to the test. At the same time, the Nicaraguan crisis has forced more than 800,000 Nicaraguans to flee their country, seeking refuge in Costa Rica, Mexico and Panama.

The situations in Venezuela and Nicaragua have forced many defenders to flee to neighboring countries, where they continue their work despite threats and challenges. In addition, in Central America, the political, social and economic crises that are causing migratory flows throughout the region continue, leading to an increase in human rights violations.
